The Mercedes SLS AMG Black Series is a high-performance variant of the SLS AMG, produced by Mercedes-AMG from 2013 to 2014. This limited-production supercar embodies the pinnacle of AMG's engineering expertise, boasting unparalleled performance, handling, and exclusivity. Only 350 units were produced worldwide, making it a highly sought-after collector's item.
Developed in collaboration with AMG's racing division, the SLS AMG Black Series was designed to bridge the gap between the road-going SLS AMG and the SLS AMG GT3 racing car. Engineers focused on reducing weight, increasing power, and enhancing aerodynamics. The result was a car that could lap the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 7:25.67 minutes.
Key performance features include:
6.2L V8 engine producing 631 horsepower and 468 lb-ft torque
7-speed dual-clutch transmission
Rear-wheel drive
0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds
Top speed: 199 mph (electronically limited)
Weight reduction: 154 pounds lighter than standard SLS AMG
Enhanced aerodynamics with revised front and rear spoilers
To further enhance performance, Mercedes engineers focused on reducing the car’s weight. The SLS AMG Black Series features extensive use of carbon fiber in its body panels, including the hood, roof, and rear deck lid. Additionally, the car is fitted with lighter wheels and a reduced weight interior. The net effect is a car that not only performs better in terms of speed but also offers improved handling, agility, and braking.
The suspension of the SLS AMG Black Series is a key highlight in terms of its dynamic capabilities. It features an AMG Sport Suspension, which is fully adjustable and comes with a stiffer setup compared to the regular SLS AMG. The suspension system is designed to offer maximum control during high-speed cornering, ensuring that the car remains stable even under extreme conditions. The Black Series also boasts a larger front and rear track width, improving grip and cornering performance.
To complement the suspension, the car is equipped with high-performance ceramic brakes. These carbon-ceramic composite brakes provide excellent stopping power, even after prolonged track use, and are significantly lighter than traditional cast-iron discs. The brake system also helps reduce the overall weight of the vehicle, contributing to better overall performance.
The exhaust system on the SLS AMG Black Series has been fine-tuned to produce a more aggressive sound compared to the standard version. The exhaust system uses AMG’s own signature twin exhaust pipes and features a more prominent resonance, delivering a spine-tingling soundtrack that amplifies the driving experience.

Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 (2011)
Ferrari 458 Italia (2009)
Comparison highlights:
The SLS AMG Black Series outperforms the 911 GT2 RS in acceleration (0-60 mph)
Its Nürburgring lap time surpasses the Aventador LP 700-4
The Ferrari 458 Italia falls short in power output
The 2014 model year is considered the most valuable due to its rarity (only 100 units produced). Limited-edition models, such as those with the AMG Aerodynamics package or unique color combinations, command premium prices. In 2022, a 2014 SLS AMG Black Series sold for $1.1 million at auction. As a collectible, the SLS AMG Black Series is expected to appreciate in value over time.
